NDOT’s goal is to provide next day service on Five-Day permit requests, but the permittee must apply one business day prior to any desired movement, either by telephone before 4:00 PM or at the office before 4:15 PM. Permittees are limited to five permit requests per telephone call after 3:00 PM.

Due to the unpredictable volume of requests on any given day, and to ensure a permit is issued on time, NDOT highly recommends that permittees apply at least two (2) business days in advance of any desired movement date.

Manufactured and Mobile Homes are permitted in accordance with NAC 484.525 (2b), NRS 484.762 and NRS 484.7625.

Valid for five consecutive calendar days or five consecutive business days, over a permitted series of interconnected/contiguous routes, that may include dead-end, laden and/or unladen legs.

During the permitted timeframe, repeated movement is authorized in either direction on the permitted routes unless specifically restricted by the permit, by regulation, or by other rule.

Only one load authorized per permit.

Note #1: Hours of Daylight are one-half hour before sunrise until one-half hour after sunset.

Note #2: Weekend Hours are from one-half hour after sunset on a Friday until one-half hour before sunrise on the immediately following Monday.

Note #3: See Holiday Restrictions for ODVs.

Note #4: Hours of Darkness are one-half hour after sunset until one-half hour before sunrise.

Note #5: Up to 120’ with some steerable trailers.

Note #6: Overhang is any portion of the load that extends beyond the front edge of the truck or trucktractor or beyond the rear edge of the truck or trailer. Unless otherwise specified, overhang is the sum of both the front and rear overhang.

Note #8: These restrictions apply during all weekend hours on I80 between Sparks (Exit 21) and the CA/NV state line, and on I15 between Las Vegas (Exit 33) and the CA/NV state line. 110’ maximum length regardless of steerable trailer.

Note #9: If exceeding these dimensions, call for special instructions. A Five-Day Permit may be authorized in some situations, however processing may require additional business days.

Note #10: Vehicles exceeding 8’, 6” wide or 70’ long are prohibited on some roads or may require pilot cars.

FINES Fines for weight range from $10 up to.08 cents a pound for 10,000 lbs. and above.

Fines are calculated based on declared gross vehicle weight. Operators may be fined for either over-axle or over-gross, but not both. Drivers may not shift load to avoid an over-axle citation, and must shift load to legal requirements to continue travel.

Fines doubled during spring weight restrictions, February through April on designated routes.

The following are standing prohibitions for over-width or over-length vehicle loads and all reducible load, longer combination vehicles (over 70 feet in length) on routes under jurisdiction of the Nevada Department of Transportation.

A 5-day ODV permit may be obtained for the below routes, when there is no other reasonable alternate route or when the point of origin, destination, pick-up or delivery is on the route. ODVs exceeding 8 feet, 6 inches in width or 85 feet in length require pilot cars fore and aft. Additional pilot cars and law enforcement escorts may be required when exceeding 12 feet in width or 85 feet in length at the discretion of NDOT and the Nevada Highway Patrol.

For current restrictions and details including bridge and route restrictions for overweight vehicles, see the NDOT web site. For current highway construction restrictions, see the NDOT 511 Information web page.

NV-7 02/15 SC&RA Oversize/Overweight Permit Manual These restrictions are subject to change without notice. The basic rules governing pilot cars and permits for loads exceeding legal size or weight outlined in the 2004 Nevada Commercial Vehicle Handbook still apply.

See the NDOT website for the most current information.

The Specialized Carriers & Rigging Association is pleased to publish this Oversize/ Overweight Permit Manual.

Each state analysis includes information in a standardized format: contact, legal limits, special permit limits, general restrictions, types of permits available, fees, escort needs, fines, and restricted travel areas. Telephone numbers, locations, and hours of operation are listed for ports of entry and permit branches. However, readers are always advised to check with the state offices on current laws and procedures. This project could not have been completed without the advice and consultation of many state officials. We thank all of those who provided permit manuals, maps, laws, regulations, and various other forms of documentation.

Legal Notice This SC&RA Oversize/Overweight Permit Manual is intended only to provide concise, easily read information, useful in planning movements of overdimensional and overweight loads. This Permit Manual is not intended to be an accurate summary of all the applicable laws and regulations. Users of the Permit Manual should confirm the information contained herein before dispatching vehicles and loads. The SC&RA cautions Permit Manual users that state laws and regulations are subject to change without notice, and that some time elapses between the effective date of such changes and the amendment of the Permit Manual to reflect those changes. The SC&RA assumes no responsibility for accident, injury, loss or claim, penalties or any other damage resulting from reliance on the contents of this Permit Manual.
